Delia Owens is an American author and zoologist, best known for her debut novel Where the Crawdads Sing (2018), which became one of the best-selling books of all time with over 18 million copies sold worldwide.
Born in 1949 in southern Georgia, Owens holds a BS in Zoology from the University of Georgia and a PhD in Animal Behavior from the University of California at Davis. Before turning to fiction, she spent twenty-three years living in some of the most remote areas of Africa, conducting scientific research on lions, elephants, and other wildlife.
Her experiences in Africa led to three internationally bestselling nonfiction books co-authored with her former husband Mark Owens: Cry of the Kalahari (1984), The Eye of the Elephant (1992), and Secrets of the Savanna (2006). Her scientific research has been published in prestigious journals including Nature, Animal Behavior, and Journal of Mammalogy.
Owens has received numerous awards for her work, including the John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing, the Golden Ark award from Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, and the University of California Award for Excellence. She is also co-founder of the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation.
Where the Crawdads Sing, her first novel, topped The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers list in 2019 and was adapted into a major motion picture in 2022. The book draws on her deep knowledge of the natural world, particularly the marsh ecosystems of the North Carolina coast where she now lives near Asheville.
