Harlan Coben is an American writer of mystery novels and thrillers. Born in Newark, New Jersey and raised in Livingston, he attended Livingston High School alongside future New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. After receiving a political science degree from Amherst College, he worked in the travel industry in a company owned by his grandfather. Coben's first novel, the romantic thriller "Play Dead," was published in 1990 when he was 28. In 1995, his third novel "Deal Breaker" launched his popular Myron Bolitar series. The plots of his novels often involve the resurfacing of unresolved events from the past, with multiple twists. Coben is the first author to win all three of the most coveted mystery writing awards: the Edgar Award, Shamus Award, and Anthony Award. He was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2017. In 2018, Coben signed a major multi-year contract with Netflix to develop 14 of his novels into series or films, with him serving as executive producer. The deal was extended in 2022, cementing his status as one of the most adapted thriller writers in television.
