Louise Penny Books in Order
Louise Penny CM OQ is a Canadian crime-fiction author, best known for her Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series set in Quebec. Born on July 1, 1958, in Toronto, Canada, she grew up immersed in mystery fiction through her mother's love of the genre, reading classic authors like Agatha Christie, Georges Simenon, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Michael Innes. Penny earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Radio and Television from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in 1979. Before turning to mystery writing, she spent 25 years as a journalist and radio host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in various cities across Canada. Encouraged by her husband Michael Whitehead, Penny left the CBC in 1996 to pursue writing. After struggling for five years with a historical novel, she turned to mysteries, basing her fictional village of Three Pines on her town of Knowlton, Quebec. In 2004, she submitted her first manuscript for the British Debut Dagger award, where it placed second but attracted an agent. Her debut novel, Still Life (2005), introduced Chief Inspector Armand Gamache—a character largely inspired by her husband Michael, who was the former Head of Hematology at the Montreal Children's Hospital. The series has since grown to over 20 novels, selling more than 18 million copies worldwide and being translated into over 23 languages. Her books have repeatedly reached number 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. Penny has won numerous prestigious awards including multiple Agatha Awards (seven times), Anthony Awards, the CWA Dagger, and was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Novel. In 2013, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada "for her contributions to Canadian culture as an author shining a spotlight on the Eastern Townships of Quebec," and in 2017 was appointed an Officer of the National Order of Quebec. Her husband Michael Whitehead passed away from dementia in 2016. Penny continues to live in a village south of Montréal with her beloved Golden Retrievers.
