Kaz Brekker gets offered a job that's impossible: break into the most secure facility in the world and extract a scientist. He puts together a crew of six, each with their own skills and problems. Bardugo structures it as a heist novel with fantasy elements, and the crew dynamic is the best part. Each character gets backstory chapters that explain why they're broken and why they work together anyway. The Grishaverse worldbuilding is there but the book stands on its own.

Crooked Kingdom
The crew deals with the fallout from the heist and the enemies they've made. Kaz's plans get more elaborate, the personal stakes for each crew member escalate, and Bardugo resolves the romantic subplots alongside the action. The duology format works well because two books is enough to tell the story without padding. The ending gives each character a conclusion that fits their arc.
