The Saxon Stories (also known as The Last Kingdom series) follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg, born a Saxon nobleman in Northumbria but captured as a child and raised by Danish Vikings. Set in 9th and 10th century England during the Viking invasions, the series chronicles Uhtred's conflicted loyalties as he is torn between his Danish upbringing and his Saxon heritage. Despite his personal inclinations, Uhtred repeatedly fights to bring about Alfred the Great's dream of uniting all English-speaking kingdoms into one nation. The series spans over 13 novels, following Uhtred from his childhood through old age as he witnesses and participates in the birth of England. The first ten novels were adapted into the acclaimed Netflix/BBC television series The Last Kingdom, starring Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred.
