The Shining Books in Order
The Shining series consists of two novels set decades apart, following Danny Torrance and his psychic abilities known as "the shining." The first novel is set at the haunted Overlook Hotel, while the sequel follows an adult Dan Torrance as he confronts new supernatural threats. Both novels have been adapted into acclaimed films, with Stanley Kubrick directing The Shining (1980) and Mike Flanagan directing Doctor Sleep (2019).
The Shining
Jack Torrance takes a job as winter caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel, bringing his wife Wendy and young son Danny. Danny possesses "the shining," a psychic gift that allows him to see the hotel's horrific past. As winter sets in and Jack falls under the hotel's malevolent influence, the family's survival hangs in the balance.

Doctor Sleep
